THE COAT OF ARMS OF AUSTRALIA

описание

Description

Australia (Commonwealth of Australia) is a country situated in the Southern Hemisphere on a separate continent. This continent is considered to be the smallest one in the world. The capital of Australia is Canberra. The official language is English. Its total area is 7 617 930 sq km. Its population is 22 864 922 people. Australia is divided into six states and two territories: New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania, Northern Territory and Australian Capital Territory. Australia owns unique flora and fauna. Plants and animals met here cannot be found anywhere else. Like any other country Australia has its state symbols: flag, anthem and coat of arms. Australian coat of arms was created in early 20th century. It is a shield supported by a kangaroo and an emu, which meant to be unofficial animal emblems of the nation. They owe this recognition to the fact that they are native Australian animals. These animals were chosen to “hold” the shield together because they are almost of the same size. They both can move only foreword (not backward) thus symbolising the progress of the state. The shield contains the emblems of each state of Australia. In the background is wreath of Golden Wattle, the official national floral emblem. At the bottom of the coat of arms is a scroll that contains the name of the nation.

History

описание

The first coat of arms granted by King Edward VII on 7 May 1908 consisted of a shield in the centre, the seven pointed stars on a wreath as the crest above it, and a Kangaroo and an Emu supporting the shield, all on a bed of green grass with a scroll containing the motto "Advance Australia". But the original version was redesigned in 1911, and officially granted by George V on 19 September 1912. The redesign of the coat of arms spurred much debate in the Parliament. Some members believed the animals on the state emblem made the whole nation ridiculous. Despite objections, the kangaroo and emu continued to bear the shield and were modified to appear more realistic. The main reason of changing the coat of arms was absence of emblems representing each of six states. The main purpose of coat of arms is to identify Australian authority and property.

Use

The coat of arms identifies Australia as an independent state, symbolizes its independence and freedom. It is used as badge of rank for Warrant Officers Class 1 (Army) and Warrant Officer (Navy and Air Force). A more stylised version is used as a badge of rank for Warrant Officer of the Navy, Regimental Sergeant Major of the Army and Warrant Officer of the Air Force.
